Frozen Monkey fondue was delicious!

Pam thinks so too...

Cui is bananas for fondue...

We went to Frozen Monkey Cafe for the Toblerone fondue--very delicious!

Hoboken wonders...

Jon's pointing at nothing...

Afternoon in Hoboken

We stopped in Hoboken after mini-golf to walk around.

A factory in New Jersey...

Jon must have taken this picture because I have no clue what or where this is...

Cui was pretty good--she made it on par for the first hole...and then we stopped keeping score; and then we stopped playing correctly at all.

I'm up...I've got Pam putting on video...

Jon's up...

On Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, we go to see X-Men 3 with Pam and Cui. Pam and I went into the theater to get seats early while Jon figured out what to eat and waited for Cui to arrive to give her her ticket. Pam and I got to see the She-Ra movie, when He-Man and She-Ra first meet and realize that they're brother and sister. It was so weird. X-Men 3 was not as great as the first one or second. There were just way too many strange things that happened that made no sense. Anyway, we went to Mitsuwa for lunch--Pam and I got curry udon, Jon got soba, and Cui got sushi. We also all got some goodies from the market to take home--just wait there's a picture of all the crap Jon bought. Anyway, we walked over to the mini-golf place next to the Mitsuwa and driving range and played the 18 holes. The mini-golf place is an eyesore during the day or maybe it wasn't as run down as when we went during high school. Cui's up first.

After Chikalicious, we went to some kitchen supply place that was moving and having a ridiculous sale--so ridiculous that the line wrapped around inside the store and went up the sidewalk outside the store. We also went to Sur La Table, which was a much friendlier place to be. When we go to Momofuku finally, it was jammed packed, and people were waiting outside too. The food was so delicious and comforting. I wish we lived closer...we got a cold ramen, though it was basically the momofuku ramen with cooled noodles, the warm broth on the side. They're using peas too, which is pretty awesome--because unless I'm forgetting, they used to use the pink stuff. We also got miso buttered asparagus, the pork buns, and roasted vegetables like zucchini, but it was really good with a kind of vinegary soy sauce. We walked back, and checked out the Morgan Library from the outside too. Very beautiful building. It was such a good day!

Jon got an even tastier rhubarb dessert. (I was a smidge jealous.)

Our ultimate goal was to go to Momofuku for dinner, but it took us awhile to get down there, and they close for a short break during the day, so we went down third, through a street fair, and went to Chikalicious instead. I got a delicious mango and caramel sorbet dessert.

On our way to Trader Joe's we picked up a diet berry Dr. Pepper thing (one each), and we picked up two bottles of Sprite promoting the new logo. So we really didn't need anything at Trader Joe's by the time we got there. We also passed through Union Square's Farmer Market and tasted some jam from the guy on the Northeast corner. In the Trader Joe's we tried some beet sample that wasn't so bad.

Our second stop was to check out The City Bakery. Behold the Frozen Hot Chocolate...very chocolaty, but it was good with gazpacho. The pretzel croissant was good too. I wasn't too crazy about the cookie I got though--too rich with the chocolate drink. Can't really understand why my editor loves this place so much though--I mean there are other places to try in the city for lunch. The atmosphere is nice though, it's not loud at all.

Our first scheduled stop included Books of Wonder. We walked into the cupcake shop part of it, and the woman behind the counter looked like she just had a rough day. Jon and I browsed--there were some signed Lane Smith books, and in the back some rare books. I wanted to find a copy of the George Saunders book--but the original publisher, not McSweeney's, but we didn't, and I didn't want to ask.

Other carvings...

Top of the church...pretty medallion window...

On 10th Ave. while walking down from 28th, Jon's phone flew out of his case, which he was swinging in his hand. I pointed this church out to him, and then the phone went flying. Here he is sulking and making sure it still works. (It does, but it's a little scratched up.) The details on this little church are really pretty.

Jon thought these windows were cool; the building is on 28th and Westside Highway.

This is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Jon and I decided to not make the trek down to the beach and instead to walk around New York instead. The night before he also surprised me by taking me to Mas (right next to Blue Ribbon Bakery in the West Village). Mas was good--we got a bunch of appetizers, but the reservation was late, so it was hard to enjoy dessert though the dessert was good. Also, I saw Claire from Objet there. So, very strange especially because I thought after whatever she was still doing at Rutgers, she was going back to Arizona. It was like seeing a ghost. She looked older, but happier than she was at Rutgers. Her friends were loud when they laughed, but they seemed to try to be friendly toward her. It's nice to see that maybe outside of Objet and Rutgers she's actually normal and not as pretentious and scary and drained and intense as I remembered. Anyway, this picture is point A and Z of the urban hike Jon and I were making--our building.

Me and Cui on the flight deck of the Intrepid in front of one of the ships docked on the Hudson. This ship had a big 3 on it, if I remember correctly. Fleet Week was kind of exciting--and always is. I always kind of hope for a great renactment of On the Town, but I guess that's asking for a little too much. American sailors are much more interesting than the French--and their uniforms are cooler too. Cui commented on how a woman must have designed their uniforms--with all that attention to detail: hats and gloves and that kind of stuff. I just wonder how it must be difficult to wear white pants--I mean what kind of underwear can you wear to feel comfortable? But perhaps their pants are thicker than when you see older women with white linen pants and panty lines.

We made it to the flight deck eventually--which is actually the second best part about the Intrepid (the first being the submarine, though it really has nothing to do with the actual ship). When we went into the Admiral's--or whoever's under the Captain--deck, we met a man who was working there that seemed really bored. Once we walked in, he asked us if we had any questions...well we just walked in, and there's signs everywhere about what things are, not that it really mattered to us. Anyway, he asked us if we were from around here, and we said, no. He suggested that we were from Miami or somewhere else, and we said, no, we're from New Jersey. He said that no one from New York ever visits the Interpid; he can understand since he was born and lived in Paris and never been to the Eiffel Tower. The Admiral's deck was not as cool as the Captain's--it was like a condensed version.

After lunch, Cui and I went to the Intrepid because she's never been--and it was Fleet Week, so we thought'd it be fun. She's standing in front of a submarine we went in. The submarine used to really be used and held nuclear weapons for defensive purposes...something like that. There's a periscope, claustrophobic rooms, and sometimes you can feel the currents making the submarine sway. There was a little boy who kept asking interesting questions--questions I'd ask if I were a talkative little boy. His mom suggested that he "zip it" though. I guess she sensed that not everyone wanted to hear what he had to say. Poor kid. Submarine was really cool though!

Salad and pasta...

Sexy deliciousness...

Lunch ala Citarella

Cui and I got out of work early the Friday before Memorial Day--I got out of work a bit earlier than Cui, so I whipped up some lunch with some Citarella help. I bought some fresh porcini stuffed ravioli, fresh spicy tomato sauce, and a stick of Balthazar bread. It was a delicious, cheap, and quick lunch!
